Awards

We are incredibly grateful and proud of all of our Monsoons members and couldn't achieve our goal of expanding opportunities for volleyball in North Queensland without you.

These are the members of our club who have been recognized at the Monsoons Awards for their outstanding contributions as an athlete, coach, or volunteer!

Legacy Awards

Sportsman of the Year:
This award is given annually to an individual from our club who has demonstrated exceptional service and performance in 2022. This award is based on sporting performance across all of 2022 including those as athletes and referees at local, state, national and international competitions. points are allocated to player achievements according to the level of competition and athletes with the highest cumulative score will receive the award.
- 2022 Winner: Cooper Whaling

Sportswoman of the Year: Sponsored by KX Pilates Idalia in 2022
This award is given annually to an individual from our club who has demonstrated exception service and performance in 2022. This award is based on sporting performance across all of 2022 including those as athletes and referees at local, state and national competitions. Scores are allocated to player achievements according to the level of competition and athletes with the highest cumulative score will receive the award.
- 2022 Winner: Shannon Wong

Michael Matheson Club Person of the Year:
Presented to a Monsoon Volleyball club member who has rendered exceptional service to the club and the progression of volleyball in North Queensland without the expectation of recognitionThis award is named after Michael Matheson who is one of Townsville Volleyball’s founding fathers and has a limitless passion for the sport, which has led him to contribute countless hours towards providing new opportunities for the North Queensland community in indoor and beach volleyball. 
- 2022 Winner: Peter McCann

Rising Star:
The “Rising Star” award recognizes a high achieving, up and coming junior athlete from the Monsoons community. The nominee must be currently attending school.
- 2022 Female Winner: Babette Verkuijl
- 2022 Male Winner: Christian Enriquez

Coach of the Year:
The “Coach of the Year” award is to honour a coach who has demonstrated a sound ability to develop and improve individual and team performance throughout the year. They have promoted fun, fairness, participation, respect and upholding the rules, values and goals of Monsoons Townsville Volleyball.
- 2022 Winner: Therese Smith

Developing Referee of the Year:

The “Developing Referee of the the Year” is awarded to the referee who exhibits commitment to understanding and developing the game of volleyball through consistently learning and applying the skills of umpiring. This award is selected by a board including: Club Head Coach, A Grade Coordinator and B Grade Coordinator.

- 2022 Winner: Zac Bale

Representative Team Awards

Most Valuable Player:
This award recognizes the player who, according to their teammates and training partners, has demonstrated game-changing excellence throughout the year.
- 2022 Women's Team: Helen Yan
- 2022 Men's Team: Bailey Groube

Most Improved Player:
This award is given to the player who made the most strides in development in her/his game in 2022.
- 2022 Women's Team: Amy Carleton
- 2022 Men's Team: Adan Stephens

Coach's Award:
This is intended for the player who always demonstrates good sportsmanship, always listens to the coach, and is reliable in attendance at training and games, as well as a consistent team player who assists other players rather than seeking glory on their own.

Social Competition Team Awards

Best Team to Play Against:
This team is the most fun to play against - whether it's their competitive spirit, good sportsmanship, and all around good effort by the team!
- A-Grade: Block or Bleed
- B-Grade: Safe Sets

Team with the Best Chat:
This team loves a bit of banter through the net and uses good-natured goofiness to get others off their game. 
- A-Grade: The Wiggles
- B-Grade: Just the Tip

Most Improved Team:
This team has shown the most improvement during the 2022 season.
- A-Grade: Ace Holes
- B-Grade: New Kids on the Block

Team with the Biggest Roof:
They're impossible to hit around, they're human skyscrapers, they've got paddle pops for arms and they will block you any day of the week. You love to hate them, but at the end of the day, they've got the biggest roof.
- A-Grade: Free Ballin
- B-Grade: Diggas in Parris

Team who "always gets it up":
It doesn't matter how hard you hit that little yellow ball, this team will always get it up.
- A-Grade: Adobo Nation
- B-Grade: Consensual Sets
